zen.spamhaus.org

ZEN is the combination of all Spamhaus DNSBLs into one single powerful and comprehensive blocklist to make querying faster and simpler. It contains the SBL, the XBL and the PBL blocklist.

In most cases, zen.spamhaus.org replaces sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org. If you are currently using sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org you should now replace 'sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org' with 'zen.spamhaus.org'.

zen.spamhaus.org should now be the only spamhaus.org DNSBL in your configuration. You should not use ZEN together with other Spamhaus blocklists, or with blocklists already included in our zones (such as the CBL) or you will simply be wasting DNS queries and slowing your mail queue.

Caution: Because ZEN includes the XBL and PBL lists, do not use ZEN on smarthosts or SMTP AUTH outbound servers for your own customers (or you risk blocking your own customers). Do not use ZEN in filters that do any ‘deep parsing’ of Received headers, or for other than checking IP addresses that hand off to your mailservers.

ZEN Return Codes

Querying zen.spamhaus.org returns the following result codes for listed entries (see FAQs for a more complete return code table):

Return Codes Data Source Contains
127.0.0.2 Spamhaus Block List Direct UBE sources, spam services and ROKSO spammers
127.0.0.4-8 Exploits Block List Illegal 3rd party exploits, including proxies, worms and trojan exploits
127.0.0.10-11 Policy Block List Non-MTA IP address ranges set by outbound mail policy.

ZEN Usage

The ZEN blocklist can be used by all modern mail servers, by setting your mail server's anti-spam DNSBL feature (sometimes called "Blacklist Servers" or "RBL servers") to query: zen.spamhaus.org

Use of the Spamhaus DNSBLs is free of charge for low-volume non-commercial use. To check if you qualify for free use, please see: Spamhaus DNSBL usage criteria.

Disclosure

We ask, but do not require, that all ISPs using Spamhaus DNSBLs inform customers that spam filters are in use on their network and that these filters include the Spamhaus DNSBLs.

Meaning of ZEN. We could have come up with a cool metaphorical explaination for using "ZEN", meaning a sense of organization, the combined focussed energy of our DNSBL teams... But really we chose the name because Zen was Spamhaus founder Steve Linford's German Shepherd guard dog. For many years Zen faithfully guarded the Spamhaus base in England, so we think it's apt that Zen now helps guard your networks and customers.
